Students returning to school this fall packing books in Clarksville, Arkansas, will encounter some staff members packing something else – concealed 9mm handguns at the ready. The Arkansas school district has taken the controversial step of arming several of its teachers and staff in reaction to the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in last December in Connecticut. The handguns will be provided after staff members receive about 8 days – 53 hours – worth of training and are considered under state law to be school guards and empowered to carry weapons. Clarksville is a community of 9,200 people about 100 miles northwest of Little Rock.
