No one has yet been able to stop the spread of the dreaded Crypto Locker Malware, a virus that scrambles the contents of your computer than then charges you a $300 ransom to unlock it. New reports show it has frustrated the FBI and has infected nearly 250,000 computers in just three months. The program first started appearing around Sept. 5 when users inadvertently opened email attachments purportedly showing UPS or Fed Ex shipping updates. Opening the attachment triggers and encryption program and within an hour, the user is informed the contents of their computer will be lost if they do not pay the ransom to unlock the cipher. The botnet has thus far evaded organized attempts to take down its ransom collection websites. Security experts believe they have traced the origins of the attack to parts of Russia and former eastern block nations.
