After initially declining, the Federal Trade Commission says it will look at findings of a probe by Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway which examined persistently high gasoline pricing in Ky. Conway says one gasoline company, Marathon, has great influence over pricing and has a near monopoly on the Kentucky market. Marathon operates the former Ashland Oil refinery at Catlettsburg, Ky. The FTC says after looking at the results of Conway’s probe, it may elect to conduct its own investigation but that remains to be decided. As summer driving season approaches, motorists are already seeing some of the highest prices prices in more than a year.
