An iconic photograph of several police officers dressed in full military uniforms pointing assault rifles at an African American man who is holding his hands up on a street in Ferguson Missouri again has civil libertarians and many mainstream Americans questioning whether police are inviting street protests there in the aftermath of a fatal shooting. Ferguson and St. Louis County police have appeared with armored tank-like vehicles, tear gas and concussion grenades and a heavy handed approach. Reporters have been arrested and a new crew was tear gassed. It has stirred debate over how far should police go in terms of functioning and appearing as a full-fledged military unit.
