On a nondescript island near New York City, nearly one million people have been buried in the nation’s largest paupers’ field. Hart Island is home to New York’s unnamed and unclaimed dead. Advocates and some reporters have been working to obtain more information about the secretive site, which is managed by the city’s Department of Corrections. Hart Island has been closed to the public since 1976, but more information about the dead and the general location of where they are buried is becoming available.
