Medical Problems With Essure?

National-Ad-Campaign-Young-Woman-Having-Painful.jpgDogged by thousands of lawsuits, pharmaceutical giant Bayer said in mid 2018 that it will halt sales of its controversial Essure birth-control device in the United States at the end of the year. The lawsuits allege Bayer did not disclose serious side effects and health problems from using the device.

Bayer now faces more than 16,800 Essure lawsuits over the Essure device. Thousands more women have filed complaints with the US Food and Drug Administration over its use. Bayer brought Essure from original marketer Conceptus Inc. in 2013.

That concludes a long battle over a feminine contraceptive implant that has been blamed for serious health problem by thousands of women. Victims allege it caused persistent pain and bleeding resulted in cuts of the uterus and fallopian tubes and resulted in unwanted hysterectomies. The FDA in April 2018 added a boxed warning to the labeling and required patients to complete a checklist with their physician. Those steps led to a sharp decline in sales.

Once inserted, Essure was supposed to cause permanent sterilization and it was not intended to be removed. The device consists of two inch-long, flexible coils made in part from an alloy of nickel and titanium. In a short procedure that does not require surgery; a doctor inserts the coils through the vagina and cervix and into the fallopian tubes, which carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. Over a three month period after insertion, scar tissue is supposed to form around the coils, creating a barrier that keeps sperm from reaching the eggs.

Bayer said its announcement was a business decision and that Essure remains safe to use. The United States is the last country where Essure is being sold. Sales began in 2002. An estimated 750,000 of the contraceptive devices have been implanted in women around the world.
