Meet Your Advocates: Mark, Emily, and David
We have three primary attorneys who work on sexual assault cases:
Mark Bryant
The founder of Bryant Law, Mark was born and raised in Paducah, Kentucky, and has practiced there since his graduation in 1973. He has extensive experience inside and outside the courtroom, and a strong history of winning cases and supporting his clients.
Outside the courtroom, Mark volunteers time and fundraising expertise for the Boy Scouts of America, the George Wilson SAFETY Foundation, and the Wounded Warrior program. He is dedicated to helping sexual assault survivors receive the justice they deserve.
Emily Roark
Emily graduated from the University of Kentucky Law School and moved straight to Bryant Law, where she quickly rose to success. She has recovered millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements for clients due to her tenacity and determination.
She has a passion for helping victims of medical malpractice, including dangerous medical devices and procedures, recover compensation for their losses, and she brings that same passion and grit to sexual assault cases.
David Bryant
For David, law isn’t just a personal passion; it’s a family one. From the time his career began in Lexington, he has worked with a variety of personal injury-related claims, including medical and pharmaceutical products. He is committed to helping sexual assault survivors obtain justice for the damages they suffered.
Civil vs. Criminal Justice: Understanding Your Options
Sexual assault is a crime. For many survivors, that means dealing with both the criminal justice system and the civil one.
The Criminal Justice System
The criminal justice system is handled by prosecutors who are focused on punishing perpetrators. It relies heavily on a burden of proof: the prosecution must build a clear case that shows that the perpetrator committed the crime.
The Civil Justice System
In the civil system, survivors can seek damages from perpetrators, yielding:
- Financial compensation: Direct recovery for losses caused by the assault.
- Institutional accountability: Policy or systemic reforms from responsible entities, such as schools, employers, or companies.
- Personal closure: Greater direct involvement to aid healing.
Civil actions are independent of criminal cases; financial recovery remains possible without a criminal conviction.
